Gene and I decided we were going to grow a garden this year.  We decided we were going to grow one last year but well it never happened.  We got seeds a week or so ago and Emma has asked everyday since to plant them.  So yesterday we got everything we needed to start seeds indoors, Gene and Emma were really excited. No, I’m not kidding VERY excited. I calculated when we could start the seeds… turns out not for another three weeks. So no planting last night, Gene was bummed he wanted to plant them anyway, and Emma asked for a garden in her bedtime story.  So this morning I asked Emma what was something fun she wanted to do today, and she said she wanted to, “Grow a garden!” I caved and we started a select few seeds, Emma loved every minute.  The funniest part was when Emma held up a packet of squash seeds, and said to Gene, “Look Daddy, squash, it’s not yummy!”  So much for the hope that growing her own vegetables might get her to eat them.

Emma is running up and down the hall as we speak singing, “I am running through the forest.”  Why, because she is pretending to be Pocahontas and she figures that what Pocahontas does.  Today she has also been Cinderella the Mermaid, and Melody the Mermaid.  And who does Emma say I am right now, Powhatan of course, Pocahontas’ Daddy.

Since Emma is such a fan of glue sticks, I cut out a bunch of hearts and had her glue them on construction paper to make Valentine’s cards.

Emma’s favorite part… the scissors.  Very quickly she gave up on gluing heart on the cards and cut them up instead. Grrrrrr, but at least she had a fun time.

So Emma likes many things but at the top of the list would have to be cheese and cake. Here are some pictures of here recently eating a block of cheese Neanderthal style as well as decorating and eating a cake she made with her mommy. - Gene

After the cheese she yearned for some sweets so she and Kim made a mini cake for her to decorate and a large one for the adults. Emma put about two spoonfuls of icing on her mini cake and gave up and started to spoon the icing into her mouth.

We were at the Dr.’s office today to get an antibiotic for Emma’s ear infection.  Emma is not a fan of being examined by the Dr., and usually I have to hold her down.  She is growing up my little girl though, and today she climbed up and sat on the exam table and let the Dr. look in her ears and throat.  Of course it involved a bribe, a cupcake.  Before the Dr. came in, I told Emma that if she would let the Dr. look at the food in her ear, (She is draining fluid out of her ear, and had been telling me she has food in it) she could have a cupcake.  She agreed, but I really didn’t expect much.  When the Dr. came in and started to look in her ears she started to pull away I said, “Cupcake”, then she held still and let him look.  Then he asked for her to open her mouth, and she shook her head no, and again I said, “Cupcake”, and then she opened her mouth.  I was so proud! And Emma loved her cupcake.

Emma in her Christmas dress. Such a lovely smile and ladle, she wasn’t a huge fan of me interrupting her cooking.

This year there were almost enough cousins to act out the full nativity.  We’re just short a few wise men. Madeline was Mary, Colby was Joseph (and probably will be for years to come), Isabelle was an Angel, Lucy was Baby Jesus, and Emma was a sheep.

We had an our white elephant gift exchange……and now Amy is on my bad list along with Zac.  I picked Amy’s gift, a nasty horse mug full of live crickets, yuck!  Zac is still on my bad list from three Christmas’ ago when he gave me a dead rat, beyond GROSS!

Christmas breakfast is my favorite, hot cocoa, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, fresh sqeezed orange juice, bacon, and toast.  This Christmas we also played Ultimate Frisbee, which my team won by the way (only because Amy and I were on it j/k), had a dance party, played cards, went shopping, and hung out around the house.  My favorite quote for the holiday “Be prepared for rejection!” Said by Markie of course, and I know it doesn’t make sense it wouldn’t even if I tried to explain, but I laughed so hard I cried, and I am writing it here so that I can remember it.

Second half of Christmas post to come soon… I am missing a few pictures I want to post.

We have started to play hide and seek with Emma.  It has been a lot of fun! Most of the time when she hides she closes the door to a room and stands behind it and waits for you to open it.  Here is a picture of her hiding.

Well it has been a while since we posted so there is a lot to catch up on.  This Christmas season was a bit of a juggle with family coming and going on both sides at all different times throughout the fortnight (that’s a fancy way to say 2 weeks) so let’s start from the beginning.

First we started out by hanging out with my family first (this is Gene writing btw). Shane and Leah’s family came down from Washington almost a week before Christmas Day. It was nice to have everyone around (minus Gavin and Kate - we can try for that next year hopefully) as we were able to go and do some fun things as well as enjoy being lazy as a large group… the more the merrier right?

Anyways above you see can some pictures of the gingerbread house that Leah cooked up (bottom right). It was fun eating candy er I mean building the house, train, and chapel later to douse it with some heavy snow thanks to C&H (bottom left pic). We also played cards and board games while sucking down Martinellis and eating goodies (top right duh).

We also went to the Dinosaur exhibit at Thanksgiving Point. Emma was scared at first with the prehistoric sounds piped into the speakers but eventually warmed up to the place. There were some really cool dinosaur displays to look at for the adults and some very fun interactive exhibits for the kids. Emma, Marie, Oliver, and Peter made their own prehistoric scene (pic on top right) and also were able to dig for bones with Shane (bottom left). Towards the end we went into the store to look around at all the different goofy souvenirs.

Anyways Emma enjoyed spending time with a large contingent of her cousins, she even has got all of their names down (on both sides) which is a lot better than I can do. It was also nice for Kim and I to spend some more time with Shane and Leah.

Most nights this is how I find Emma when I check on her before I go to bed.  She has stripped and fallen asleep in front of the door.
